Arab League schedules meeting on crisis in Sudan

CAIRO, Egypt, Aug 03, 2004 — The Arab League will hold an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss Darfur upon the request of Sudan’s foreign minister, the league’s spokesman said Monday.

The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution Friday giving Sudan 30 days to disarm Arab militias blamed for the deaths of thousands, mostly black Africans, in the western Darfur region or face diplomatic and economic penalties.
