Bor MP expresses regret over renewed raids on villages

October 22, 2014 (BOR) – A legislator from Jonglei state’s Bor county has described two separate incidents that led to death of one man and the looting of about 200 head of cattle on Tuesday as “regretful”.

Maker Chol Adol, who represents Bor’s Makuach and Anyidi payams (districts), said the attackers remain unknown, but urged neighbouring communities to ensure that the perpetuators are brought to justice.

“We are regretting this renewed cattle raiding and call upon our neighbouring authorities in [the] Greater Pibor Administrative Area and Teregeka county to ensure that [the] culprits are arrested and held to account,” Maker told Sudan Tribune from Bor on Wednesday.

One man was killed in an attack on Tuesday morning some 40km along the Bor-Juba road, while some 200 head of cattle were raided in Tibet, about 6km east of Bor in a separate incident that evening.

No suspects have been arrested in connection to the two incidents, which have shattered five months of tranquility in the county.

Maker said cattle footmarks have been traced to the east of Bor county towards Pibor.

Members of the Murle ethnic group from Pibor county have in the past been accused of conducting cattle raids on Jonglei communities.

However, Tuesday’s incident is the first reported case in Bor county since former rebel leader David Yau Yau signed a permanent peace agreement with president Salva Kiir’s government in May.

Yau Yau was subsequently appointed to head the newly created Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), which has been enlarged from two to seven counties.
