On Saturday, an attacker with a sharp object killed two soldiers guarding a gate at Sudan’s presidential palace before being shot dead by other troops.

Following the incident, the official spokesperson of the Sudanese army, al-Sawarmi Khaled Saad, said the man, identified as Mohamed Tiya Kafi, is a native of Kadugli, capital of South Kordofan state, describing him as “mentally unstable”.

The Sudanese police said in a statement on Tuesday that it investigated the identity and national number of the attacker through the civil registry, saying they retrieved all information about him through his fingerprints.

It added that one of the attacker’s relatives pointed that his actions in the recent period became strange, saying he had illusions that persons and airplanes are attacking him.

He added the assailant was recently treated by the kujour (traditional medicine man).

According to the police statement, the information was confirmed by the testimony of the owner of the farm in which the attacker worked as a watchman.

It said the farm owner informed the police of a phone conversation in which the assailant asked him to come and rescue him was being attacked by gunmen, pointing when he arrived at the farm he neither found him nor detected any trace of an armed attack.

“This information proved this person suffered from psychological disorders and his actions were impacted by obsessive-compulsive disorder”, the statement said.

However, a person who claimed to be the cousin of the attacker circulated a voice message in the social media saying the real name of the assailant is Salah Kuwa Daldoom Kafi, pointing he is from the Nuba Mountains and a Sergeant at the presidential guards.

He said the assailant resigned from service after he took part in the military operations to liberate Abu Kershola area in South Kordofan, pointing his resignation was not accepted and he suffered from financial troubles after his salary was stopped.

He said the attacker went to his military unit on the day of the incident to discuss his resignation but to no avail, noting he told them that he intends to go to the presidential palace to his complaint to the Commander in Chief and president of the republic Omer al-Bashir.
