Warrap youth deny petitioning governor over child neglect claims

November 18, 2014 (JUBA) – A youth entity in South Sudan’s Warrap state has distanced itself from a recent petition by a section of young people and human right activists demanding that governor Nyandeng Malek relinquishes her position.

The petition came in the wake of widespread allegations that Malek abandoned her newly-born baby in Kenya and returned to the state.

Joseph Akol Wek, a spokesperson for the aggrieved youth, expressed dissatisfaction with the newly elected youth leader, Benjamin Bang Bang, over the manner in which he appointed his deputy through a process considered contrary to the constitution.

“We have no link with the petition written about the alleged child neglect by the governor. This is a social matter. Our differences with the new chairperson were purely an issue to do with violation of the constitution. It was something to do with our affairs as youth of Warrap,” Wek told Sudan Tribune on Tuesday.

“It has no connection whatsoever with the state government and privacy of the governor,” he added.

Joseph Anei Madoor, the director for public and political affairs in the governor’s office, claimed the petition originated from losers in the just-concluded youth leadership polls.

“I am taking this opportunity to officially refute the recent statements and calls in which some of the clique within the youth union who lost the elections decided to obnoxiously rush and propagate to all media houses that they have petitioned the honorable elected governor, madam Nyandeng Malek Dielic on this social issue,” said Madoor.

Wek, however, said charges were “untrue, malicious, defamatory and irresponsible”, vowing to take legal action against Madoor should he fail to prove his allegations.
