Sudan welcomes deployment of Egyptians observers in Darfur

KHARTOUM, Aug 04, 2004 (MENA) — Sudan’s information minister Tuesday said his country welcomes deployment of Egyptians to observe a cease-fire in war-torn famine-struck Darfur, adding this is an acceptable matter as long as the observer team would word within the African Union (AU).

Al-Zahawi Ibrahim Malik, in statements to MENA today, voiced Sudan’s appreciation of Egypt’s supportive stance in these circumstances, referring to the amount of humanitarian aid sent by Egypt to the refugees and displaced in Darfur via an airlift.

On the Sudanese government’s readiness to share power and wealth with the rebels of Darfur, Malik said “we don’t share power and wealth with individuals but rather view that the solution to the Darfur problem can not be reached except through negotiations with the rebels”.

He added that the Sudanese government has come up with 14 initiatives to solve the Darfur problem via negotiations, but all have failed.
