Sudan’s DUP to participate in 2015 elections: NEC
December 8, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The National Elections Commission (NEC) in Sudan said on Monday that it has registered 42 political parties including the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) led by Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani that plan to participate in the 2015 elections.
The NEC also disclosed that they are communicating with the remaining parties to secure their participation in the upcoming elections.
Most opposition forces refuse holding the 2015 elections as planned and call for delaying it pending the formation of a national government during a transitional period to oversee credible elections.
The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) brushed aside these calls and insisted on holding the elections on time.
The NEC has announced that nomination papers will be accepted starting December 31st.
It also affirmed that the electoral process is moving in accordance with schedule which started on October 28th.
The NEC Secretary-General Jalal Mohammed Ahmed told Sudan news agency (SUNA) that in coordination with Sudani Telecom they will provide a phone service by which voters can find out polling sites in their respective areas.
Ahmed said that decisions of the judicial commission to annul and correct voter data will be published next week for review by the NEC afterwards.
In the same context, the NCP called on its organs to open up to all political forces in the country and invite them to participate in the upcoming elections.
The NCP political sector headed by Mustafa Osman Ismail reviewed in its weekly meeting on Monday the party preparations for the elections.
The spokesman for the party Yasser Youssef said the NCP wants the elections held on time in the second week of April 2015 per NEC timeline.
Yusuf said the elections is the mechanism that will lead to the peaceful transfer of power, the equitable distribution of wealth and achieving political stability.
