Indian army makes donation to John Garang university

December 20, (BOR) – The Indian battalion of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has donated text books and balls as gifts to students at the Dr John Garang University of Science and Technology.

Col. Himanshu Hatkar, the battalion commander described the move as a small assistance extended towards to the institution.

“We are thankful for giving us the honour to be associated with this university, cradle for future leaders, future industrious citizens, professors and doctors of this great nation”, he said last week.

“We have just begun the thousand mile journey to help improve the university,” said the battalion head as he handed over the donations to university administrators present in Bor, the Jonglei state capital.

Also underway, Col. Hatkar said, is a plan to prepare the university’s field to enhance sports activities among the student community.

The university’s vice chancellor, Julia Aker Duany lauded the Indian community for their valuable contribution to the institution.

“They did not come to provide security only but to help us develop in minds through books, this will help us to transform our behaviors”, she said.

A month ago, the Indian battalion donated more than 30 texts books to the same institution.

Meanwhile, the state minister for education, Tut Kuony requested the Indian government to avail study opportunities for Jonglei state students in various professions.

“We want our students to be trained in India. We shall send a batch to India for training”, said the Kuony, but did not elaborate further.
