One killed, another injured in attempted raid on Jonglei’s Twic East
January 13, 2015 (BOR) – At least one person was reportedly killed and another injured after a raid at Pawuoi cattle camp in Twic East county’s Nyuak payam (district) on Tuesday.
The incident occurred about 1pm (local time) when a number of armed men, suspected to be criminals from the semi-autonomous Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), attacked herders in Twic East.
“It is very unfortunate that we have lost one person in the attack. The other herder had injuries [and] he was rushed to Bor hospital,” Twic East county commissioner Dau Akoi said.
Herders in the area pursued the attackers for four hours and were able to recover hundreds of cattle.
According to the commissioner, evidence located in the vicinity of the attack, including traditional items and food, suggested the attackers were of Murle ethnicity.
Sudan Tribune has been unable to independently verify the claims.
“They were running with the cattle to the east, the direction where Pibor is, and also there were some items found in that area identified by the herders to be from [the] Murle [tribe],” said Akoi.
South Sudanese army (SPLA) army forces in Gadiang have been informed of the incident and will attempt to locate the attackers, who Akoi has described as “enemies of peace”.
The camp that was attacked was a combined camp, comprising of herders from Twic East and Duk.
This attack was the third incident of its kind so far this year, according to Akoi, who has appealed to the GPAA administration to take stronger measures to curb criminal activities in the region.
Sudan Tribune was unable to reach officials in Pibor for comment on the incident.
