North Darfur to pursue rebels fleeing captured areas
January 14, 2015 (EL-FASHER) – North Darfur plans to carry out a joint security operation to clear the state from rebels who sneaked into the main towns after the recapture of eastern Jebel Marra area.
North Darfur governor, Osman Mohamed Youssef Kibir, stated on Tuesday that the state security forces and the army will implement a significant joint operation to ward off possible attacks by insurgents in the state.
Kibir told a local radio station in El-Fasher that the security services spotted the arrival of rebels feeling from Finga area eastern Jebel Marra to the main town in North Darfur.
He accused the insurgents of planning to carry out banditry attacks, adding that the state security followed them and identified the sites where they stock the carjacked vehicles.
The Sudanese army recently announced the recapture of Figna from a coalition of rebel groups including Sudan Liberation Movement-Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) and other SLM splinter factions.
Further, Sudanese army spokesperson al-Sawarmi Khalid Sa’ad on 12 January said they retook the control of Abu-Liha area east of Kutum in North Darfur State from the SLM-MM.
Kibir admitted the delay of the state government in the implementation of a plan to curb insecurity in North Darfur, attributing it to the recent operations against the rebel groups.
However he reiterated the determination of his government to fight insecurity and end carjacking, wearing of kadamool (turban which covers the face), and driving of shaded vehicles.
He disclosed that the state signed an agreement to import vehicle tracking devices allowing to locate cars, adding that his government will stipulate to equip vehicles with this device before to matriculate it.
