Arab FMs meet Sunday to discuss Darfur
KHARTOUM, Sudan, Aug 06, 2004 (UPI) — Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othamn Ismail said Friday he will brief his Arab colleagues on Sudan’s efforts to resolve the crisis in Darfur.
He said he will give them all the details about Khartoum’s bid to settle the world’s worst humanitarian crisis at all all levels, be it political, security or humanitarian.
Arab foreign ministers are scheduled to meet Sunday in Cairo to discuss U.N. Resolution 1566 requesting Sudan to settle the Darfur crisis or face sanctions.
Ismail was quoted by the official Sudanese news agency as saying Khartoum is genuinely seeking to ensure security, the flow of humanitarian assistance and a political settlement in Darfur, in western Sudan.
The United Nations gave Khartoum 30 days to end massacres committed by the government-backed Arab Janjaweed militia and bring criminals to justice or face harsh international sanctions.
