Two killed in South Sudan border shooting

January 19, 2015 (JUBA) – Unknown gunmen on Sunday night shot and killed two renowned businessmen at South Sudan’s border town of Nimule, local officials said.

“At 9pm [local time], armed men came and targeted two of our members; David Kisiriyara and Anthony Gwanya, shot them dead in front of Motherland Hotel,” said Emilio Igga, the chief administrator of Pageri administrative area.

The attacker reportedly shot each victim eight times before fleeing the crime scene.

“He shot them and confirmed that they were dead before he left,” an eyewitness said.

Only traces of blood remained at the scene as police occasionally patrolled Nimule town as shops remained closed throughout Monday.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident as investigations continue.

“This kind of targeted killing is very painful. People are really very sad. The mood in the town is bad,” Igga told Sudan Tribune by phone on Monday.

The Madi communities strongly condemned the killings, urging the United Nations mission in the country (UNMISS) and the international community to investigate the incident.

“We reject the killings and intimidations of your people in our own land. The Madi people are peace loving people and this is a well-established fact in South Sudan,” partly reads a statement issued by the Madi community in United States of America (USA).

In a separate attack, three people were killed and six others sustained injuries following a cattle raid in Kworiji-Luri village, situated north of the capital, Juba.

Local officials blamed neighbouring Mundari tribe for allegedly carrying out the attack, a claim Sudan Tribune could not independently verify.
