Sudan agrees to deployment of human rights observers in Darfur
KHARTOUM, Aug 07, 2004 (dpa) — The Sudanese government has agreed to the deployment of eight human rights observers to the three states of the troubled Darfur region, press reports said Saturday.
The observers will help investigate allegations of abuses committed by the government backed Arab Janjaweed militias.
An advisor at Sudan’s Advisory Council for Human Rights, Abdelmunaem Osman was quoted by the pro-government Sudan Media Centre (SMC) as saying that in the coming days the region of Darfur will witness the arrival of the eight observers from the U.N. Human Rights Commission.
Officials from the Sudanese government and the U.N. agreed on Friday on an action plan for the Darfur region.
Osman expressed his government’s determination to bring to justice Janjaweed members accused of committing atrocities against the population of Darfur, but did not specify the number of arrested Janjaweed members.
