President Kiir vows to resolve political rift in N. Bahr el Ghazal

February 4, 2015 (JUBA) – South Sudan president Salva Kiir is ready to resolve the current political differences and divisions within its Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, a ruling party (SPLM) official said.

Daniel Awet Akot said president Kiir promised to pay attention to the matter, but warned the population not to be carried away by what already transpired.

A section of members from the state legislative assembly recently mobilised in an attempt to have the caretaker governor, Kuel Aguer Kuel removed from office.

“We have submitted the report of our visit to the state of Northern Bahr el Gazal to the president and he has assured his readiness to resolve the matter. I have a confidence and trust in him,” said Akot.

“He [Kiir] would do that very soon to resolve it amicably,” he added.

Akot, who headed the parliamentary committee formed to look into the Northern Bahr el Ghazal saga, said he met and talked to all groups in the state who equally cooperated with his team members.

The president’s decision, observers anticipate, will largely depend on the committee’s report, whose findings are yet to be made public.

But the majority of the populations expect Kiir to exercise strong leadership and rely much on the constitution and will of the people.

Benson Opuothmalo, the government chip whip in the state assembly is optimistic Kiir’s decision will unite people instead of creating division and unnecessary tension.

“At this difficult moment of our country, we need to be one so that we stand we all stand behind the president and his leadership. So, I hope the decision of the president will reflect the interest of our people, so that they remain united, peaceful and continue to harmoniously together as one the same people,” said Opuothmalo.

He has appealed to all political groups in the state to accept being part of the reconciliation process once the president has made his decision.
