Two people killed in road accident in East Darfur
February 13, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – Two people were killed and 17 others injured when their truck flipped while it was heading from Asalaya market to the locality of Yassen in East Darfur state.
A survivor told Sudan Tribune on Thursday the accident was caused by arm suspension failure, pointing that seven people suffered multiple fractures and need to be transferred to Khartoum for treatment.
He added that 10 other injured are in stable conditions, noting the number of passengers and their luggage outweighed the load capacity of the truck.
Residents of East Darfur complain about rugged roads and careless driving which lead to traffic accidents, demanding the state’s government to finish the work in the Inqaz al-Gharbi highway to minimise road accidents.
They also underscored the need to build paved roads to connect between the various localities in the state.
A source within East Darfur’s traffic police department acknowledged to Sudan Tribune that 720 car accidents had occurred since the final quarter of last year.
He said that 40% of car drivers are unlicenced and that several paramilitary troops do not follow traffic rules, saying lack of resources prevented police from carrying out its duties in full.
