Massive fire consumes 100 homes at IDP camp in S. Darfur

February 14, 2015 (NYALA) – A massive fire has devoured 100 homes at Al-Salam camp for IDPs, 12km south of South Darfur capital Nyala.

The deputy secretary general for IDP’s and refugees, Adam Abdalla Gamhouri, said the fire broke out at Center 10 area which is inhabited by the newly displaced people who arrived six month ago from areas south of Nyala.

He pointed the fire destroyed 100 homes and consumed IDP’s possessions, saying 98 families are currently living in the open under very complex humanitarian conditions.

Gamhouri added the families are in dire need for food, shelter and blankets, calling on national and foreign aid organizations to offer immediate help for the affected.

He noted the poor lay out of the camp has contributed to widening the impact of the fire.

A similar fire had destroyed 250 homes at Kalma camp for IDP’s two months ago while 360 homes at Labdao camp were consumed by fires last November.
