More than 500 retirees gathered in front of the palace holding banners demanding president Omer Hassan al-Bashir make decisions to secure their financial rights including the “family allowance”.

One of the retirees complained about reducing their financial entitlements, saying they dedicated decades of their lives to the police service.

He said they were surprised that the “family allowance” was cut off four years ago without informing them, saying the law does not allow for such a move.

Protesters said that articles 16 and 35 of the Pensions Act state that retirees are entitled to full financial rights, noting the “family allowance” was stopped in 2011.

They called on Bashir to interfere to resolve the problem and secure their financial rights just like former retirees.
