Sudan’s Bashir reiterates adherence to Islamic constitution
February 16, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – President Omer al-Bashir Monday stressed adherence to the Islamic Constitution in Sudan, pointing out that the elected organs have the legitimacy to write the fundamental law.
In a meeting held with the highest religious authority, Sudan Islamic Board, at the Guest House on Monday evening the president said that “the drafting of a permanent constitution will be preceded by a comprehensive Islamic dialogue between all sectors of society to reach a constitution acceptable to all the people of Sudan and a model of the Islamic state,” reported the official news agency SUNA.
SUNA further reported that al-Bashir called on all the Sudanese to seek for the better with regard to the issue of religion and to spread the culture of Islam and the Holy Creation.
The incumbent president is the candidate of the ruling National Congress Party, he is expected to be reelected as the electoral process is boycott by all the opposition forces even those who are part of a political dialogue process he launched a year ago.
Bashir told the Islamic scholars that Western countries know well now Sudan’s determination, especially after the failure of political and economic pressures against his government.
He added that the state’s decision not to set up camps for refugees and displaced persons means to prevent Western organisations which aim to implement its own agenda hostile to Islam and Muslims.
The opposition and rebel group say they are favourable for a separation between religion and politics in a multicultural country.
The matter is supposed to be discussed in a national constitutional conference with the participation of all the political forces including the armed opposition groups.
