UNMISS suspends upgrade of Bor-Juba road
February 18, 2015 (JUBA) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has halted upgrading of 194km Bor-Juba road, less than a month after its launch.
Jonglei’s caretaker governor, John Kong Nyuon, expressed dismay at the move taken by the UN peacekeepers in the world’s youngest nation.
“There are people from UNMISS who are not happy with us [government],” said Nyuon, but did not elaborate further.
The first phase of the project was completed in January while the second phase was inaugurated early this month.
“The Korean contingency had been grading the road from here up to Juba. And now our vehicles just move very fast from here to Juba. They [Koreans] were having an initiative to move to phrase two so that they started putting maraud,” Nyuon told a rally in Bor.
“They [UNMISS] handed over a document in Juba terminating the road work. Now the road work has stop,” he added.
UNMISS, in a brief statement, said they are prioritising the country’s needs.
South Sudan’s council of minister approved $1 billion dollar in October 2014 to tarmac the Bor-Juba as well as Juba-Rumbek road.
Last month, President Salva Kiir inaugurated the Juba-Rumbek road construction project, but work on the Bor-Juba highway is yet to commence.
