Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Bor county commissioner Mamer Ruk accused ethnic Murle tribesmen of launching various insurgencies in his county since January.

Ruk also blamed Murle for the latest attack on Tibek.

He named Akoi Arou Manyang as the victim, while Mam Garang Makuach is also missing and suspected to have been killed.

Mayom Achiek Deng, who was injured in the attack, six gunmen had opened fire on the group near their homesteads, killing Manyang instantly. All of the victims are from Makuach payam (district).

“When they fired at Akoi [Arou Manyang], who was on the other side of the thick bush, they killed him on spot. I fired at those four people who killed him. Just near, there were another two; they shot me, two bullets and I ran away,” he told Sudan Tribune in Bor hospital on Wednesday.

Deng said he was certain that Murle gunmen had been responsible for the attack.
In a separate incident on 16 February policeman, Ateny Ajith Kor, was killed in an attack on Akuai deng boma in Jalle payam by suspected Murle raiders, who also fled with Kor’s rifle.

On 2 February, raiders attacked Machdeng village in Baidit payam, stealing15 head of cattle, although no casualties were reported.

“To bring this to an end is to mobilise our community to protect themselves”, he said. “These insurgencies are coming from greater Pibor Administrative area”.

The commissioner urged local youth to mobilise to protect their communities against raiders.

“We should not surrender, we have to defend our territory and properties. I urge the community of Greater Bor to address these insurgencies and save innocent civilians,” said Ruk.

Officials from The Greater Pibor Administration Area (GPAA) said it was a challenge for them to monitor the movement of raiders in the vast areas of their boundaries, which is still under establishment.
