President Salva Kiir appointed Akuong an ambassador to Washington late last year.

The South Sudanese ambassador, in his brief remarks, pledged to deepen the long standing friendship and expand on the mutually beneficial cooperation between both countries.

“Historically, the United Sates government has walked with South Sudan both during the challenging times and in times of triumph, but at this particular time, the government of South Sudan and its people are going through incredibly difficult times,” said Akuong.

However, he also urged the US to maintain its continued support for the young nation.

Meanwhile, Obama reaffirmed his commitments and support for the people and government of South Sudan, but said peace be prioritised for it to develop and prosper.

A holder of a Masters of Arts degree in international studies and diplomacy, Diing previously held various positions in both the national and state governments within the Republic of South Sudan. He also worked for United Nations and other aid agencies.
