Warrap state governor appoints first town mayor
February 27, 2015 (JUBA) – The governor of South Sudan’s Warrap state, Nyandeng Malek, has appointed Ajiek Ajiek as the first mayor of the provincial capital, Kwajok.
Ajiek is deputised by Joseph Anei Mador, formerly director for public and political affairs in the governor’s office.
The new mayor thanked the governor for the appointment and pledged to work hard and ensure that basic services are delivered to the population of Warrap state.
“[I] am confident we will do a lot as a team of committed people to move forward,” he said.
The deputy mayor was equally thrilled over the governor’s decision, pledging to work with everyone as part of efforts to government provide services to people in the area.
According to state officials, this is the second time the state government has elevated the status of Kwajok by making these appointment after it became the administrative headquarters of the state administration, following the signing of the comprehensive peace agreement that ended the over two decade north-south Sudan civil war in 2005.
In the past, Kwajok was a small village missionary station before it was turned into a military outpost for the southern army during the 1983-2005 civil war with Khartoum.
