Sudan well placed to resolve regional, international issues: FM

March 1, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese foreign minister Ali Ahmed Karti emphasised that his country is qualified to play a pivotal role in resolving regional and international issues saying Sudan is a rational state and its policies are based upon centrist ideas.

Karti, who addressed ambassadors newly assigned to several countries including Syria, South Sudan and Uganda on Sunday, demanded them to promote an image of Sudan as a rational and a peace loving country.

He further mentioned that Sudan’s regional and international diplomatic moves began to crystallise, pointing the region is passing through a critical juncture following growing activities of the terrorist Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) besides the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The minister also pointed to crises in some of Sudan’s neighbouring countries, saying that Khartoum can play a pivotal role in resolving those crises if it receives the necessary assistance from the conflicting parties.

He underscored the need to reflect Sudan’s national experience of peaceful coexistence to those who are interested in it.

The Sudanese top diplomat pointed to his country’s principled position towards the conflicts in Syria and Libya, saying influential countries did not listen to Sudan’s vision at first.

“The same bodies which rejected Sudan’s position [towards the conflicts in Syria and Libya] recognised its rationality but it was too late,” he added.

He reminded the ambassadors that they represent president Omer Hassan al-Bashir in his new term, pointing their assignments come a year after the ministry adopted a new track to implement the foreign policy.
