Jonglei state embarks on tree planting campaign

March 5, 2015 (BOR) – The agriculture and forestry minister in South Sudan’s Jonglei state has urged citizens to plant trees in their areas.

“Start planting trees around your homes and along the roads. Start your own backyard orchards with our seedlings”, said Mayen Ngor.

According to the minister, up to 20,000 seedlings of Mango and many more fruits trees will be introduced in April and May this year.

Ngor said the need to prioritise agriculture is what prompted government to establish a central demonstration nursery in Bor town.

The nursery, which produces varieties of seedlings, was set up in 2011.

“We want to change the mindset of our local farmers to see agriculture as the biggest economic sector”, stressed the minister.

In his speech during the launching, deputy governor Baba Medan said the campaign, which started in Bor, would be again be organised to include and everyone would be expected to attend.

“A bigger campaign must be held again to make sure that everyone participates in the planting program. Everyone should plant one tree along the road, you make sure that you contribute its survival monthly”, said Baba.

“Enough shade trees should be planted along the roads to provide pedestrian with shades when they move”, he added.

Currently, up to 25,000 seedlings of different tree varieties ready to be planted are reportedly available in the state’s demonstration nursery.
