Sudan army repels new rebel attack in South Kordofan: spokesperson
March 12, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese troops repulsed an attack by the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North (SPLM-N) fighters on Kuldegi town in South Kordofan, a military spokesperson said Thursday.
Following the failure of peace negotiations in December 2014, the warring parties in South Kordofan resumed the fighting as every side accuse the other of carrying ground or air attacks.
“In a desperate attempt to capture the town of Kuldegi in South Kordofan state, the SPLA rebels lost a large number of fighters and a big number of equipment and machinery used in the attack, which the Sudan Armed Forces managed to repel on Thursday morning,” Alswarami Khaled said.
After the foiled attack, SAF undertook a military combing operation to clear the area and hunt the rebels , Khaled added.
Alsawarmi didn’t comment on a statement by the SPLM-N rebels accusing the Sudanese warplanes of bombing a civilian area on Wednesday.
The SPLM-N spokesperson said a Sokhoi Jet-fighter bombed Tanase Village in Tabo County (Boram) and wounded a child girl.
Last February the UN refugee agency HCR said that over 500 Sudanese refugees are arriving per week, from South Kordofan to the refugee camps in South Sudan, as direct result of the clashes between the warring since last December.
