March 14, 2015 (JUBA) – The police in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria state have upped security measures to contain tribal tensions and uncertainties after deadly cattle raids occurred in the region on Wednesday.

At least seven people were killed, two others injured and over 500 cows were driven away by the raiders, authorities told Sudan Tribune on Saturday.

The deadly attack reportedly occurred in Bangolo payam of Western Equatoria between two Dinka communities within the area.

John Cleopa, the acting commissioner of Mundri West county said government could not respond fast since information came three days after the 11 March deadly incident.

“According to the information we have obtained from some of the victims, they told us that the raid took place on Wednesday night at around eleven or twelve in the night of Wednesday. And we only received the information on Friday,” explained Cleopa.

“This was when we started to assembly police force to go and provide protection and help bring to the hospital those who have been wounded in the raid”, he added.

Those wounded, the acting commissioner said, were taken to Lui hospital in Mundri East county for treatment.

He clarified that local people in the area never took part in the raid.

In January, a conference held in Mundri explored why communities from neighbouring Lakes state often caused tension in Mundri with their cattle. It was agreed that the cattle communities be allowed back to Yirol West and Rumbek East counties.
