The incident occurred after a land cruiser carrying passengers from Juba collided with the motorcycle near a UN compound in Bor at about 4pm (local time). The 25-year-old motorcycle driver identified as Mac Mabior from Guala community in Kolnyang payam (district) was killed instantly.

Ayum Buona, who hails from the same village, was taken to hospital unconscious following the accident, but survived his injuries.

Nurses at Bor state hospital said Buona, who is believed to be in his 40s, fractured his left leg and suffered chest injuries.

Buona’s relative, Daniel Jok, said the vehicle and the bike were moving in opposite directions when the accident occurred. He claimed the vehicle had clipped the bike while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

Officials in Bor said investigators had mapped the scene, but refused to comment on who was at fault, saying such statements could prejudice any future criminal proceedings.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was currently being held and a case would be filed once investigations have been completed.

The accident is the first this year on the Juba-Bor road. Speed has been a factor in previous incidents on the road.
