Nhial Majak Nhial said a clean environment is a prerequisite for good health and is particularly important around slum areas.

“If we are able to teach ourselves how to clean this place we will stay healthy,” said Nhial, who has outlawed littering in recent months.

Bor also recorded only low cases of cholera during an outbreak across the country last year.

“If you throw out a litter in town, it is a sin, it is a crime,” said Nhial.

The South Sudanese army (SPLA), including a number of high-ranking officers, were among those taking part in Saturday’s clean up, along with police and government officials and Ethiopian peace keepers.

CHICHA OUTLAWED IN BOR

Chicha, an addictive substance inhaled through a smoking pipe, has also been outlawed in Bor.

Police arrested a number of individuals allegedly selling the substance in Bor on Saturday.

The suspects were found to be army officers who had deserted their positions.

Nhial said there would be no remissions for soldiers found to be breaking the law.

“I have warned people in this business for the last two years and people continue to use chicha as a weapon against others,” he said.

“People think that making trade in chicha is the only thing they can survive on,” he added.

He said authorities would be taking a zero tolerance approach to chicha and that those found to be selling or buying the substance would be held accountable.

The soldiers where handed over to the military prison and further investigations are being conducted.
