Gunmen kill official at IDP camp in South Darfur

The deputy secretary-general of IDPs and refugees union in Darfur, Adam Abdalla Gamhouri, said that three gunmen in military uniforms sneaked into Ottash camp and killed Idriss Ahmed at 1am (local time) on Monday and fled the scene.

He added the killing incident comes against the backdrop of the victim’s refusal to holding the general elections in April, pointing he received death threats several weeks ago accusing him of urging IDPs not to participate in the elections.

Thousands of people have gathered during the burial at Ottash cemetery on Monday morning denouncing the incident and describing it as “cowardly act”.

Darfur’s IDPs and refugees union had earlier announced support for the poll boycott campaign launched by the opposition forces last month.

Gamhouri said that holding of elections in April would prolong IDPs sufferings, pointing it will enable those involved in Darfur’s crimes to stay in power and commit further abuses against civilians.
