No to foreign intervention in Darfur crisis: Syrian radio

DAMASCUS, Aug 09, 2004 (Xinhua) — Syria’s official Damascus Radio stressed on Monday that foreign interventions was not acceptable in dealing with the Darfur crisis.

“No one can deny the Darfur crisis, but it doesn’t mean under any conditions accepting foreign interventions, since they aim at partitioning Sudan and seizing its wealth,” the Radio said in a political commentary.

The commentary said the Arabs were supposed to assume their responsibilities regarding this Arab problem, stressing that the problem had to be solved by Sudan, together with the Arab and African countries.

Ongoing events in Darfur necessitated a quick settlement with the Sudanese, which needed a reconsideration of the mechanism of the joint Arab action, the radio said.

Indifference will aggravate the situation and increase dangers facing all Arab countries as a whole, it added.

The rebel groups in Darfur took up arms against the Sudanese government in February last year because they claimed that their region was neglected by the government.

The United Nations considered Darfur as a place with the most serious humanitarian crisis in the world, which left up to 10,000 people dead and some one million displaced.

On July 30, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution, asking the Sudanese government to disarm the Arab militia, known as the Janjaweed, which was blamed for the atrocities in Darfur, otherwise it will face international sanctions.
