Sudan frees opposition figures after four months in detention
April 9, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese authorities on Thursday released two opposition figures arrested since four months for signing a political charter calling for a comprehensive process with the rebel groups last December.
Also arrested with them was Farah Agar, a dissident member of the ruling National Congress Party who met with SRF leaders in Addis Ababa.
The defence lawyers spokesperson, al-Muiz Hadrah told [Sudan Tribune that the three opponents have been released by a decision of the justice minister who has the right to freeze the lawsuit against the defendants in accordance with the code of Criminal Procedure
In a statement released after their release, the NCF said it has become clear that the case was “quite malicious and has nothing to do with the law which the regime claimed that the detainees breached”.
The alliance also said that the release of the opposition figures will not fool the Sudanese people and the opposition forces, adding that the prisons of the regime are full of political detainees.
The statement reiterated the rejection of the opposition forces for the upcoming elections and called on the Sudanese to support its programmes for freedom and democracy.
Sudanese government officials were not available for comment. Also the justice ministry didn’t issue a statement on the release of the prominent political detainees.
Their release comes three days before the start of the elections in Sudan.
The incumbent president, Omer al-Bashir, concluded Thursday his electoral campaign by a long speech broadcasted by the Sudanese TV channels as the three-day vote will begin on 13 April.
All the opposition parties boycott the election and call to postpone it and to hold a an inclusive process to discuss issues related to peace and constitutional reforms.
