One dead as clashes erupt in South Darfur
April 10, 2015 (NYALA) – One person was killed on Thursday in clashes between unidentified gunmen and security patrol in Al-Wihda neighbourhood in the center of South Darfur capital of Nyala.
South Darfur government spokesperson, Abdel-Mutalib Ali Idriss, told Sudan Tribune that security patrol arrived at the Al-Wihda neighbourhood upon notification that an armed group was looting and robbing people’s property.
He said that one civilian was killed by a stray bullet when the gunmen clashed with the security patrol, pointing the latter cordoned off the neighbourhood to prevent the escape of the perpetrators.
Idriss added that clashes took place in an inhabited area which made the security patrol deal cautiously with the situation to avoid any casualties among civilians.
He said that security organs are following leads which would reveal identity of the perpetrators, pointing that strict measures will be taken to secure the electoral process which will kick off on Monday.
Last week, unidentified gunmen killed a merchant in his home in Sham Al-Nassem neighbourhood in Nyala.
Also, another armed group carjacked a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) vehicle on Thursday in the center of Nyala before it was later restored by security forces.
In a bid to curb criminal activities, the state authorities in July 2014 declared an indefinite emergency situation in South Darfur state, including a curfew from 7pm to 7am (local time) in the capital Nyala.
