Sudan’s electoral body criticised over lack of polling centres

April 11, 2015 (WAU) – The Sudanese community in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state have criticised Sudan’s National Election Commission for failure to establish polling stations that would have allowed them participate in the 13 April elections.

“If the National Elections Commission and the Sudanese government have neglected the whole Darfur region in the elections, why not establish a polling stations centre in South Sudan so that we as Sudanese people in South Sudan should vote?” he said.

“The National Election Commission should have provided South Sudan with polling stations like what it has done in other countries like Egypt, Libya, Doha and other nations where Sudanese people will be voting on Monday,” he added.

A number of Sudanese main opposition groups have vowed to boycott the polls in which the incumbent Omer Al-Bashir is expected to win. The elections are being held amid escalating violence in Darfur region, Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.

The European Union announced that it will not send a team of monitors to witness the country’s general elections and expressed doubts that it will produce credible results.
