UNICEF Sudan condemns killing of 10 children in S. Kordofan

April 16, 2015 (KHARTOUM) –The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has condemned in a the killing of 10 children in the war-torn South Kordofan state, urging the warring parties to respect child rights.

The agency issues a short statement on Thursday, saying the children were aged between two and 15 and were killed sometime over the past two weeks.

“UNICEF condemns in the strongest terms the continued loss of innocent lives in Sudan as a result of armed conflict,” said the statement.

The UN agency did not provide details about how and when they have been killed but the commissioner of Kadugli, South Kordofan state claimed that the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement killed two children in a mortar attack on the town on Wednesday.

The rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) also accused government forces of carrying out air and ground attacks on villages inhabited by civilians in the rebel controlled areas during the past two weeks.

“Children continue to bear the biggest burden of this man-made disaster,” said UNICEF.
