Police officer injured in Jonglei market shooting

April 17, 2015 (BOR) – An officer from the South Sudanese army (SPLA) shot and injured a policeman at Marol market in the Jonglei state capital, Bor.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred at about 8.30am (local time), causing panic among residents as many fled for safety.

Bor county commissioner Mamer Ruk told Sudan Tribune that a bar brawl involving two drunk soldiers caused the market scuffle.

“A mechanised SPLA soldier shot a police of Rajaf unit with whom they were drinking. The policeman has injuries on his leg and the SPLA soldier ran away, but he is being followed,” Ruk said by phone.

He appealed for calm among residents, denouncing the poor discipline among soldiers.

Last year, three Ugandan nationals were shot and killed by an errant policeman in the same market attracting widespread condemnation from local authorities.
