S. Sudan president to appoint new cabinet: spokesperson

April 22, 2015 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, will appoint a new cabinet ahead of his swearing in ceremony on 8 July, his spokesperson said on Wednesday.

“President Salva Kiir is scheduled to re-sworn as the country’s president on the 8th July 2015 as per country’s amended constitution that extended Kiir’s term for three years more term,” Ateny Wek Ateny told reporters in the capital, Juba.

“The new cabinet will be an inclusive cabinet that would involve the participation of all the other political parties,” he added.

According to Ateny, the president will also appoint new caretaker governors in the country’s states, despite recent calls for extension of their terms.

Kiir, whose term in office was to end on 8 July this year, recently had his mandate extended by MPs for another three years.

However, the South Sudanese leader faces a huge challenge as his government grapples with rebellion that killed thousands and displaced nearly two million people.
