E. Equatoria police arrest suspects linked to grenade attack
April 23, 2015 (JUBA) – Police in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria state said they have arrested some suspects over a grenade attack in the capital, Torit, last weekend.
State police commissioner General Edward Dimitry said the identities of those arrested would be concealed so as not to jeopardise ongoing investigations.
“We have arrested suspects but we don’t want to announce numbers because we fear doing so will affect investigation process,” Dimitry said by phone from Torit on Thursday.
“The people are being treated as mere suspects and maybe the real criminal is still at large,” he added.
The arrest comes a day after Eastern Equatoria state governor Luis Lobong Lojore offered a reward of 100,000 South Sudanese pounds (SSP) for information leading to the arrest of the attackers who hurled a hand grenade in a Torit-based nightclub.
“The state government will make sure that the culprits are found; we will search mountains and hills and bushes to make sure that these people are brought to book,” Lojore said when he visited the wounded people on Wednesday atJuba hospital.
It is not clear if the latest arrests were connected to the governor’s offer of a reward.
Meanwhile, authorities have since banned nightclubs in Torit town.
