One killed, dozens injured in students clashes in Khartoum
April 29, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – A Sudanese student was killed on Wednesday in clashes which erupted between students belonging to the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and others supporting Darfur rebels groups at the East Nile College (ENC) in Khartoum.
“The student, Mohamed Awad, was injured during the clashes and died later at the hospital of his wounds,” the statement reads.
The statement said the police filed charges under article (130) of the criminal law, adding that they formed teams to go after the perpetrators and undertake the necessary legal procedures.
The slain student, who belongs to the NCP, was the former secretary general of the ENC students’ union.
Eyewitnesses told Sudan Tribune that dozens of students were injured in the clashes, pointing that most of them are in critical condition.
They said that clashes erupted when students affiliated with the NCP celebrated the election? victory of president Omer Hassan al-Bashir, saying they ended up tussling with Darfur students leading to bloody clashes in which both sides used knives.
Several students had died in recent years as a result of political disputes including the death of Al-Tayeb Salih, also a student at the ENC who was kidnapped in January 2015 and later found dead.
In 2014, a student at the University of Nyala by the name of Mohmaed Sulieman was also abducted and his dead body was later found in the outskirts of Nyala.
Also in 2013, Ali Abakar, a third year, a third year economic student at the University of Khartoum, was shot dead when security forces and the police entered the campus, using tear gas and live bullets to disperse a demonstration organised by Darfur students at UofK.
In December 2013, four students from Darfur studying at University of Gazira including Mohamed Younis Nil Hamid, Adel Mohamed Ahmed and al-Sadiq Abdalla Yaquob and Nu’man Ahmed were killed in clashes with pro-government students.
Also three students at the University of Zalingie were killed in 2012 during a visit by the former UN envoy for peace in Darfur Gibril Basoli to the university campus to hold a lecture on the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).
