South Sudanese security agents abandon opposition leader’s house
May 4, 2015 (JUBA) – South Sudanese security agents have left the country’s main opposition leader’s house, more than a week after it was besieged.
However, Anyoti Adigo, the minority leader in parliament, said the siege was lifted following a meeting of top security chiefs on Saturday.
The opposition legislator said the SPLM-DC leader was told the incident emanated from misunderstanding on the side of operatives.
“The siege around the house of Dr. Lam Akol has been lifted. They [security chiefs] said it was a misunderstanding from their side. We don’t know what caused that misunderstanding and why a misunderstanding within the security force resulted into the siege of the house a citizen,” Adigo told Sudan Tribune in Juba on Monday.
“These are the questions people are asking but the correct answer has not been forth coming. So it was decided to let it go and move on”, he added.
Akol Koor Kuc, the director general for internal security bureau and his external security counterpart, Thomas Duoth reportedly attended Saturday’s meeting.
This contradicts earlier statements from the country’s information minister, Michael Makuei, who denied the house siege, describing it as the opposition’s “usual claims”.
The surprise deployment shocked the opposition leader’s relatives and supporters.
A former senior member of the country’s ruling SPLM party, Akol broke away to form SPLM-DC, contesting for the presidency in the 2010 general elections.
