EDF/SPLA killed 46 LRA rebels and captured 2 in Lowai

Equatoria Defence Forces (EDF)

PRESS RELEASE

August 11, 2004

A week ago we reported heavy fighting between EDF and rebels of Ugandans Lords resistance Army (LRA) when they attacked Lowai ( 2nd August 2004).

Our gallant forces repulsed and dispersed the LRA rebels who numbered several hundreds and we killed 46 in the fighting. Two LRA rebels were captured alive one of whom we have now handed to the Ugandan Peoples Defence force (UPDF) and we are keeping one prisoner who can provide the evidence to the press and other enquirers of the fact of Sudanese army involvement in supporting and arming the LRA even when they ( Government of Sudan) continued to deny it.

As we said earlier on August 3rd 2004, EDF lost one soldier and two were wounded in the fighting. The LRA killed four civilians when they attacked the nearby camp of Kuraangerebe for Internal displaced persons (IDPs).

The failure of this latest campaign of the LRA which began by a task force incursion into Moti on 23rd July means that they would have to think twice before making any more incursions into our villages to cause destruction and spread terror. LRA rebels must surrender now as they have no where to hide. After all the GoS, under International pressure, is now allowing UPDF to chase Kony and his thugs beyond the red line and so LRA may be in their final days in South Sudan; but we cannot write them off until Lord Kony is captured dead or alive and our EDF/SPLA soldiers are on the look out for him as the only thing left to deal with. Kony has to answer for his crimes against humanity both in Uganda and South Sudan.
