Key provisions proposed by the IGAD for the agreement on the resolution of the South Sudanese conflict

June 12, 2015 (ADDIS ABABA) – The East African regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has unveiled a proposed draft agreement between president Salva Kiir’s government and armed opposition faction of the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement (SPLM-IO) led by former vice president, Riek Machar, in ending the 18-month long civil war in the country. The draft copy, published hereunder, duped as ‘key provisions and justification for the agreement on the resolution of the conflict in the Republic of South Sudan,’ also included in the power-sharing former detainees (FD) and other political parties (PP) in the young nation. The draft agreement proposed to maintain incumbent president Kiir as head of state while the opposition leader, Machar, becomes the first vice president. The incumbent James Wani Igga would also continue as vice president. Executive powers or roles between the three top executives would be negotiated by the parties.
