SPLM convenes special meeting after former secretary general’s return

June 23, 2015 (JUBA) – The leadership of South Sudan’s ruling party (SPLM) convened on Tuesday a special meeting at the National Liberation Council (NLC) level to discuss the re-instatement of its former secretary general, Pagan Amum, who returned to the young nation after spending more than a year in neigbouring Kenya .

Amum’s return followed a series of talks between the party’s top leaders and the former political detainees, with the involvement of high profile African officials from Tanzania and South Africa. Former cabinet affairs minister, Deng Alor Kuol led the team to Juba.

The former secretary general was accompanied by the Kenyan defence minister, after which he held meetings with senior SPLM members, including president Salva Kiir.

Sudan Tribune was unable to immediately establish what the leaders had discussed at the meeting, although sources privy to what transpired intimated that the leaders were keen to discuss the re-instatement of Amum to his former position secretary general.

Other sources said the party endosed the decision to revoke the dismissal of some o its senior members, including former vice president, Riek Machar and have them reinstated.

Akol Paul Kordit, spokesperson of the members of the SPLM allied to president Kiir in Arusha reunification process, said the NLC will convene a special submit to discuss the necessity to cancel previous decisions taken at height of conflict in 2013 and make correction in accordance with the Arusha reunification agreement.

He said Machar will be reinstated to his previous position as the first deputy chairperson in the party and Taban Deng Gai returning to his membership at the political bureau and Alfred Lado Gore as member of the NLC. Other members will return to their ranks in the party.

“This meeting of the National Liberation Council is going to discuss important issues. It will discuss the issue of reorganization of the SPLM. It is going to address critical organizational issues pertaining to the implementation of Arusha agreement,” Kordit told reporters on Tuesday at SPLM house.
