In a meeting held on 22 June, the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AUPSC) decided to extend the mandate of the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) for an additional year, and called on the warring parties to resume talks to achieve peace in Sudan.

The AUPSC further stressed “the need for continued efforts to address the Darfur crisis as part of the holistic approach to the challenges of peace” and mentioned a roadmap for peace in Sudan adopted in September 2014 aiming to facilitate the national dialogue in Sudan.

In a statement released on Friday, the foreign ministry said African body for peace and security “confirmed its support for the DDPD as successful framework for a permanent peace and reconciliation in the region”.

“The Doha track is exclusively dedicated for peace in Darfur, and thus should not be mixed with any other path as the Blue Nile and South Kordofan (process). Also, (the DDPD) must be supported until it reaches the desired objectives,” said the foreign ministry.

Initially the government accepted the African Union efforts to facilitate the national dialogue process. It also welcomed the mandate given to the African Union High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) to hold a national dialogue preparatory meeting gathering the ruling party , opposition and rebel groups to before their participation in an inclusive conference inside the country.

However the government refused to take part in the pre-dialogue meeting on 30-31 March two week before the general elections, but vowed to participate in such encounter after the vote.

Since, the government and the opposition groups seem reluctant to engage in the national dialogue among calls for a new approach to achieve a holistic peace and democratic reforms in Sudan.

The UN Security Council is expected next week to adopt a similar resolution renewing the UNAMID mandate for another 12 months.
