Jonglei state earmarks SSP 900,000 for independence celebration
June 28, 2015 (BOR) – The government of South Sudan’s Jonglei state has allocated up to SSP 900,000 for its celebration for next month’s independence day celebrations.
Both the state and national governments will contribute, with the latter allocating SSP 400, 000.
The state minister of information, Jody Jonglei said preparations for the event were underway.
“Preparation is going well according to the plan. The budget for it had already been organised,” he said.
“The public have been invited to attend the celebration, including organised forces, school children who are being trained ahead of 9 July celebration,” he added.
Philip Thon Nyok, a member of parliament in Jonglei state assembly, said all South Sudanese citizens, including the ones in the rebel held areas, should celebrate the day.
“We are very happy that we have to celebrate it. I think even counties which are under the rebels, if they are really South Sudanese, they can celebrate it, wherever they are,” he said.
James Deng, a Bor town resident, said the Christian community worldwide were hoping for everlasting peace and reconciliation in a country, which has been in turmoil since 2013.
“This is a time we should come together and celebrate our independence. Let us go forwards, let pray for peace as all religious denominations, regardless of backgrounds, if we are longing for peace. Let us pray for peace so that everybody will celebrate in peace”, Deng told reporters in Bor on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Bor county commissioner, Isaac Mamer Ruk encouraged the internally displaced population to celebrate the fourth independence anniversary peacefully.
