WFP and IOM agree to boost cooperation in Sudan

June 29, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost their response to the needs of displaced and vulnerable people in Darfur and in other parts of Sudan.

According to the agreement, the WFP and IOM will work together to enhance the capacity of non-governmental and community-based organisations at all levels to support the vulnerable people in the conflict-affected areas.

It will also create a framework for a creative and strategic partnership between the two organizations.

The MoU was signed by WFP Sudan country director, Adnan Khan, and IOM chief of mission, Mario Lito Malanca.

The WFP Sudan deputy country director, Margot Van Der Velden, said the signing of this MoU demonstrates their recognition of the value that this partnership will bring to their work in Sudan particularly in responding to the needs of vulnerable communities and in finding sustainable solutions to promote long-term food security across the country.

“It [the MoU] seals our valuable partnership with IOM in Sudan.” she added

The IOM chief of mission Mario Lito Malanca, for his part, said his organisation remains committed to working in partnership with WFP to develop sustainable approaches in response to the needs of vulnerable populations.

“With our joint efforts we can strengthen our accountability to affected populations to displaced people and refugees and ensure that vulnerable people are supported with a variety of activities to build their capacity, thus developing more self-reliant communities.” he added

From 2010 to 2013, WFP and IOM worked closely together under separate agreements to verify the number of displaced people who live in camps across Darfur which was completed in 2013.

Through this initiative, WFP has been able to refine the list of those who continue to live in the camps to make sure life-saving food assistance goes to those who need it most.
