15 people killed, dozens injured in Lakes state revenge attack
July 3, 2015 (CUEIBET) – At least 15 people were killed and over 20 injured in a revenge attack that occurred in South Sudan’s Lakes state county of Cueibet, authorities and several eyewitnesses told Sudan Tribune on Friday.
The clashes occurred between the Pan-Nguong and Pan-Awuor sub-clans.
“Members of the Pan-Nguong [sub-clan] launched an attack towards the Pan-Awuor,” Akot Muorchol, an eyewitness said, stressing that those either killed or injured during the attack were mainly caught in cross-fire.
“It was very sad to see our youth dying just like that,” he added.
Lakes state’s acting information and communication minister, Jok Ayom said measures were in place to ensure those involved were apprehended.
“Clashes between the two sub-clans are a setback to communal peace in the county,” said Ayom, who also doubles as the local government minister.
He further confirmed that 15 people were killed while 21 were wounded.
“Yes, from the Pan-Awuor side, 12 people are killed and 16 people wounded. And from the Pan-Aguong side, three people died and five had critical gunshot wounds,” said Ayom.
Lakes state has been blighted by cattle raiding since South Sudan gained independence from the north in July 2011, and continues to be locked in a cycle of inter-clan clashes and revenge killings.
There have been growing calls from citizens for the removal of Lakes state Governor Matur Chut Dhuol, but president Salva Kiir has so far overlooked these demands.
Law enforcement officers have complained about public’s reluctance to share information with authorities, making it difficult to probe killings, maintain law and order in the region.
