Five people killed in Lakes state shootings
July 6, 2015 (RUMBEK) – At least five people were killed by unknown gunmen in South Sudan’s Lakes state capital, Rumbek, authorities told Sudan Tribune on Monday.
A South Sudanese national and four others were among those killed on Sunday.
Musa Khalid, a businessman in Rumbek, said the four foreign drivers killed worked for companies operating in the world’s youngest nation.
“Two of the three Somali drivers worked for Dalbit Company which provides fuel to Bahr el Ghazal region and a Ugandan businessman supplying food to Rumbek”, he said.
Lakes state local government and law enforcement minister, Jok Ayom confirmed the incident, but pledged the state government’s commitment to provide adequate security.
Lakes state has been blighted by cattle raiding since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, and continues to be locked in a cycle of inter-clan clashes and revenge killings.
