Turabi confident about the reunification of Sudanese Islamists
July 9, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The leader of the Popular Congress Party (PCP) Hassan al-Turabi Thursday said he was confident of the reunification of Sudanese Islamists and expressed hope to achieve it within a year.
Since the coup d’etat they organized in June 1989, the Sudanese Islamists splinted into different factions. After his removal from the party in December 1999; Turabi established the PCP.
The peace agreement of 2005, which paved the way for the South Sudan independence, deepened divisions among the Sudanese Islamists. The former mujahidin distanced themselves. Also, others led by al-Tayeb Mustafa created the radical Just Peace Forum (JPF).
Discontent and criticism for corruption within the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) pushed the former presidential adviser Ghazi Salah al-Din Attabani to lead a faction calling for reforms and established the Reform Now Movement (RNM) in 2014.
Speaking at an Iftar of Ramadan; fast breaking meal, organized by the pro-government General Union of Sudanese Students on Thursday, Turabi emphasized on the need to reunite the Sudanese Islamists during the coming period.
“Islamic movement will reunite one day, sooner or later. It became a religious duty that must be implemented,” he said before to add” we must unite before Ramadan of next year.”
Al-Turabi further called to work very hard for the creation of an Islamic society that should be an example for all the world.
“We must pray with each other in order to unify the Islamic movement,” he said and exhorted the of students to work for this goal.
Last Sunday the Islamist leader voiced his support to the national dialogue and called for the unity of Islamic forces beyond political divisions.
He stressed the unity must focus on the need to defend the role of the religion in the Sudanese society.
He also disclosed that there is a debate with the PCP over its name and the need to adopt a new name.
Turabi told the students that it is necessary to better understand the meaning of the Holy Quran, pointing that people perform prayer without comprehending its significance.
“This is what led to the destruction of the Islamic nation,” he said.
