Mathiang Maroto reportedly committed the offence at Panda hotel in South Sudan’s Lakes state after an argument over money.

“He opened fire on his colleagues in Panda hotel leaving four dead and two people, a child and woman injured,” said a resident.

Lakes state local government and law enforcement minister, Jok Ayom Majak attributed the incident to a row among soldiers over money.

“It was problem of 100 South Sudanese Pound, which was cut by the finance [ministry],” the minister told Sudan Tribune by phone on Friday.

The incident, said Majak, involved soldiers from the army’s division six batallion.

Meanwhile, thousands of people turned out in the Lakes state capital, Rumbek to mark South Sudan’s independence anniversary. The event was, however, interrupted by the shooting, which occurred shortly before governor Matur Chut Dhuol addressed the crowd.
