Nine killed, dozens wounded in Lakes state clashes

July 12, 2015 (RUMBEK) – At least nine of people were killed and dozens wounded during inter-clan clashes between the Panyon and Dhiei sections in South Sudan’s Lakes state.

The clashes, according to authorities, were largely part of the continous cycle of revenge.

Jok Ayom Majak, the acting minister of information and communication told Sudan Tribune that security forces were sent to control the clashes in Rumbek East county.

“We have confirmed nine people dead on both sides and 12 people were wounded from both sides,” said Jok, who urged the pastorlalist youth to halt these cycles of revenge.

The minister further called on the elders and politicians of the state to project the fruit of the peace campaign than basing on unfounded speeches that will divide communities.

“Let us work for peace instead of promoting division within our community. The goal to have peace is much better than campainging for revenge”, said Jok.

According to several eyewitnesses, no government official nor members of the police force intervened to separate the two rival communities during the clash in Rumbek East.

Moses Ater, an activist, said the state government had failed to manage security and urged the central government to answer public calls for the governor’s removal.

“This is an unspeakable situation in Rumbek, people are dying and the state government is having no control over security affairs,” said Ater, adding, “Let the president answer public demands for the removal of the caretaker governor [of Lakes state] immediately”.
