Two girls die of scorpion stings in Darfur

July 19, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – Two girls died of scorpion stings in the town of Sari located about 100 km north-east of El-Fasher, capital of North Darfur state in the latest incident of its kind that claimed the lives of 22 people so far.

A team from the state Ministry of Health arrived three weeks ago in town and listened to residents speaking about the spread of scorpions and scarcity of serums.

According to residents interviewed by Sudan Tribune, they asked the team to provide serums and refrigerators to store them but that state authorities did nothing so far, noting that scorpions sweep their town abnormally every year with the onset of the rainy season.

They appealed for help from state and federal authorities as well as World Health Organization (WHO) to combat scorpions.

On Sunday, two 9-years and 3-years old girls died Sunday of scorpions’ bites while two other cases arrived in hospitals in northern Darfur for treatment.

Residents say that serums are sold for 100 pound each and sometimes are completely non-existent in the remote region which lacks the most basic health services.
